Day #313 - St. Michaels, MD
June 9th, 2009A boat named VH - 15 pulled into our marina yesterday. We haven’t been able to find out anything about it. One crew member did tell us it is 165 feet.
Patti thought her ship came in.
We woke up this morning to thunder, lightening and heavy rain. We are glad to report that the rain stopped about 10:30 and we walked into town. The weather improved as the day went on and it was sunny and 85.

The sights around town are just beautiful. Many old homes dating from the 1800s line the streets.

The hydrangeas are in bloom.

Even the store fronts are colorfully painted to make you want to come inside and check things out.

So, we obliged.

The Episcopal church is right in the middle of town and their bells ring throughout the day.

The cemetery next to the church has some very old headstones.

After lunch Andy and I rode our bikes to the St. Michaels Maritime Museum. It consists of several buildings and one large wood ship building area. They actually take apprentices and teach them the art of wooden ship building. There is also a lot of history of the crabbing and oyster harvesting in the area.

The Hooper Straight Lighthouse was moved here in the 60s. It was cut horizonally at the roof line, transported on two barges, and after arrival reattached.

You can actually tour the lighthouse and see how the lightkeepers lived. One room was dedicated to the actual lightkeepers who cared for the Hooper Straight lighthouse. Note the frame in the middle.

When you are standing in the room his eyes begin to roll and he begins speaking. It was eerie.
The Inn at Perry Cabin is the site where the movie “Wedding Crashers” was filmed.

St. Michaels is very proud of their history and their contribution to the Chesapeake Bay area. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
