Follow us around the Great Loop

Day #278 - Charleston, SC

May 5th, 2009

We left Beaufort at first light and slack tide about 6:30.  There was a beautiful sunrise as we went under the Ladies Island Swing Bridge.  That is the bridge that Forrest Gump ran across in the movie.

Salvage Crew and Headquarters helped us off the dock and pulled out with us for the long run into Charleston.

The trip today is 67 miles and will take about seven hours.  The river switches back and forth and the tides and depths change continually.  In one place a bouy was under water and out of place.  Fortunately, a courteous boater ahead of us called to warn us to steer clear.

The terrain has changed again and trees seem to have replaced the palms.  Sad to leave those behind although each type of scenery is beautiful in its own way.

Just as Andy had commented that the wildlife was scarce, he noticed two bald eagles perched in this tree.  Unfortunately, it is not easy to see them.

Just in case you were in the market for your own plantation…

We will be in Charleston for one week.  Lots of time to do some exploring and catch up on some chores that have been neglected.

I recognize some of the places you photographed in Savannah and Hilton Head from my visit last year. You will love Charleston. Great food! Be sure to visit the market where women weave baskets.
