Follow us around the Great Loop

Day #277 - Beaufort, SC

May 4th, 2009

What a wonderful day to go exploring in Beaufort.  We decided to take the carriage tour around this beautiful old city and learn the history for which it is so well known.

Our tour guide was named Walter Gay and his horse, Buck.  He was very well informed and sixth generation family in Beaufort.   Many, many movies have been filmed in Beaufort.

Tidalholm (above)  was used in “The Great Santini” and “Forrest Gump.”

Forrest Gump went to this Baptist church with Bubba’s family.

Nick Nolte stayed here in “The Prince of Tides” and Sally Field in “Forrest Gump.”

The architecture in this area is beautiful.  There are more antebellum homes in Beaufort than anywhere else.

The streets are tree-lined and Spanish moss hangs from their majestic branches.  One tree that Walter pointed out is more than nine hundred years old.

This particular one is called an Angel Oak.  Notice the branches that touch the ground.

The churches are also rich in history and there are many.

After our wonderful tour we decided that we had worked up an appetite and went to Panini Cafe for a delicious lunch.

Another great day with great people. Beaufort was definitely worth a stop and we enjoyed it very much.
