Day #276 - Beaufort, SC
May 3rd, 2009Looks like it is going to be a hot one today. High expected to reach 87 and the humidity is higher than we have been experiencing. Another good reason to be on the water.
We left Hilton head about 9:45 waiting to go when the low and rising tides would be most favorable. Again, the shallow waters need to be considered.
Many beautiful homes line Hilton Head Island.

The docks must be very expensive as they are looooong and the boat lifts need to accommodate the huge tide swings and lift the boats nine feet above the low tide water.

We also passed Hilton Head Marina at the more northern end of the island.

It appears to be a nice marina, however, you would not be able to get your boat in or out of their harbor at low tide.

Before we reached our destination of Beaufort we passed Parris Island Marine Base. My brother. George, was stationed there many years ago. We also passed the Beaufort Naval Base, which is south of town.

We are excited to be going to Beaufort, SC. The city name is pronounced Bew’-fort as opposed to Beaufort, NC, which is pronounced Boe’-fort. Appearantly, the locals will be quick to correct you if you pronounce it incorrectly. The area is rich in history and the marina is located right downtown which makes it very convenient.

We were greeted on the dock by Bob and Deb, Patti and Brad. Nice to have able dock hands to help as the wind and current were STRONG. Andy did a great job parallel parking along the face dock.
Time to go exploring Beaufort.
