Follow us around the Great Loop

Day #275 - Hilton Head, SC

May 2nd, 2009

We left Georgia this morning and headed to South Carolina.  We had been warned about this passage as the channels are very narrow and the depths extremely shallow.  We draw 4′6″ of water and reported depths at low tide were 4′.

As we approached the narrow cut we could see a sailboat aground and a tow boat attempting to pull him off.  He requested a wake from Salvage Crew to try to change the water level and get him off.  Not sure if it helped as they were soon out of sight, but we did hear them on the radio later and they were free.

Not long after we passed that, we encountered a tug with a huge dredging tow behind him.  It was a little nerve racking passing him in the narrow, shallow channel, but we made it.  It was made even more challenging with the fact that we could not get him to answer us when we hailed him on the radio. We were glad when this passage was behind us.

As we passed Dufaskie Island, SC we noticed the price of their diesel and were glad we didn’t need fuel.

We pulled into beautiful Hilton Head and their Harbour Town Yacht Basin  two and a half hours and  20 miles after leaving Thunderbolt.  Bob and Deb were there to catch our lines.

We are only here for one night so hope to see as much as we can.  After we all got settled, the girls did a little shopping and exploring.

At 4:30 we went to Headquarters to watch the Kentucky Derby and have dinner.  Dinner and the company were fantastic.

The evening was made even better by the fact that we did a Derby pool and my horse, Mine That Bird,  won me $30.  Wish the bet had been in real life because his odds were 50-1.

When the night was almost over, Bob and Deb causually  mentioned that today was their mutual birthday.  Happy birthday to them and glad we could help them celebrate.
