Follow us around the Great Loop

Day #274 - Savannah, GA

May 1st, 2009

Today was our day to explore Savannah.  We started out the beautiful morning by walking to the bus stop about a ten minute walk  from the marina.

We were quite surprised to see cactus in bloom along the way.

We decided to take the tourist trolley to best see and learn about this history rich city.  Savannah is centered around twenty two public squares.  They are in the process of restoring one that had been demolished.  Life did and still does center around these squares.

The Pirate House is one of their oldest structures still standing.

Below is the Mercer House featured in the book and movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil”.

They take great pride in their beautiful City Hall.

We passed Paula Deen’s restaurant, Lady and Sons, made famous on the Food Network .  We did not eat there as there is always a long wait.

Instead we got off the trolley and walked to the City Market area and had a wonderful soup/salad lunch on their patio.

After lunch we walked to their Riverwalk area which used to be cotton warehouses.  Now it is home to hotels, restaurants and shops.

Interestingly, their streets are paved with bricks and stones that were used for ballast in the old ships that came into port.

We rode the bus back and walked back to the marina.  After a little rest and another shower we were off to eat again.   This time we walked to a restaurant near the marina named Tubby’s.  We were thrilled to see that they had wahoo on the menu.  We had not seen it since we  left the Bahamas.  It was just as good as we remembered it to be.
