Day #259 - Cocoa Village, FL

April 16th, 2009

Another beautiful day here in sunny Florida…high 76 and low humidity.  We know it won’t last forever, but certainly wish it would.

We have really enjoyed our time in this quaint little town and want to share some photos we have taken as we have gone exploring.

One of their outdoor coffee shops.

Signs in the downtown area.

The General Store on Main Street.

Ryan’s, where we had dinner last night.

Travis Hardware which comprises seven buildings and covers almost a full city block.

And, their resident pirate.  Where was he when we needed him for the Pirate Ball in Marsh Harbour?

This is their beautiful waterfront park.

There is also a local river boat that takes people out onto the Indian River.

We are looking forward to a dinner on the boat tonight with Buck Leahy and his new bride.  Andy and Buck used to be college roommates and we haven’t seen him in more than thirty years.  I bet none of us have changed a bit.

Dinner last night aboard the Good News was wonderful! It was so great seeing Andy and Mary after so many years, and Pamela enjoyed meeting them for the first time as well.

The Good News is a wonderful vessel, and Andy and Mary keep her in exactly the Bristol condition you’d expect. What a beautiful boat!

Plenty of good wine and good beer, along with Andy grilling Mary’s marinated flank steak and Bahamian lobster tails in foil, along with Mary’s stovetop dishes of yellow rice and haricots vert (what the frogs call green beans).

Mary told us how when she and Andy were first starting out in their married life, my late mother had given them a dining room table and chairs - something that I either never knew (I was off keeping the world safe for democracy at the time) or had long since forgotten (entirely possible). They were astounded to hear of the wedding gift that we received from Bob Costello - an old metal travel trunk that had belonged to my mother, one that she gave to him (also while I was gone) for helping her out with a yard sale back in the 70s.

I marvel at the blessings and opportunities that this year has brought, both with my own marriage to a wonderful woman, and with the chance to re-establish contact with some of my longest-standing friends.

Thank you, Andy and Mary, for a wonderful evening of great company and many, many laughs.

Life is indeed good, and remember: Old Guys Rule!
