Follow us around the Great Loop

Day #109 - Apalachicola, FL

November 17th, 2008

A beautiful cool morning as I watched the sunrise over Panama City Marina.  Left the docks with Headquarters about 7:30 headed to Apalachicola, 63 miles.  Today we go through a time change and will be back on EST.  Now the sun will set even sooner and makes the day shorter.

Followed a shrimp boat off to our port and watched about six dolphins play in his wake.  Two ran along side of us for a while and I went out into the cockpit and watched them for about ten minutes, pure joy.  Not a great picture, but the best of all I snapped.

The majority of the trip was through winding channels again. Tides were out and we crossed over into the EST about noon CST.  We are caught in the vortex of the river system all over again, no internet or cell connection.  Seems to even be void of wildlife.  A few fishermen and not many pleasure boaters.  Nice to look behind us and see Headquarters and know we are not out here alone.

If the economy doesn’t improve, we could be looking for a new home.  Potential???

Phew, back in civilization again in Apalachicola at Miller Marine, well sort of, it’s fairly remote.  Our home for the night.

Got off the boat and went for a walk into town.  Unfortunately, this is called the Forgotten Coast for a reason.  Many of the store were closed and there was not much activity.  We are in sponge country now.

We decided to go for oysters at Boss Oyster http://www.apalachicolariverinn.com/boss.html.  It is rated one of the top ten oyster houses in the country.  Wild atmosphere and fun place.  I finally tried my first and probably last oyster.  Not a big fan, way too slimy for me.  Bob certainly enjoyed his!
