Day #101 - Mobile, AL
November 10th, 2008

What a wonderful day we had exploring Alabama. We left the boat about 10:00 and drove back to Fairhope to Eastern Shore Marina and picked up Ellen and Roy. We went directly to LuLu’s for lunch where we met up with Bob and Deb. LuLu’s is a beachside restaurant owned by Jimmy Buffet’s sister, Lucy. Typical fare of establishments like that. More atmosphere than good food, but sat outside in the sunshine right on the intercoastal and watched the world go by. Bob and Deb left to go back to their boat but it was good to see them again.

We left there and drove down to Gulf Shores along the Gulf coast. It is obvious that many home have been destroyed by past hurricanes and they have worked quickly to rebuild them. They sit high on stilts right on the beach, are brightly colored and there are signs after signs “For Sale” or “For Lease”. Not sure what will happen to that area as there is obviously an overabundance of homes without occupants. We drove almost to the end of the point and turned around. Roy was nice enough to stop for me as I wanted to put my feet into the ocean, finally after all of these miles. It was a beautiful sunny day, clear blue skies and the water was warm. The sand in this part of the state is pure white and the water very blue, beautiful!

From there we journeyed out to Ft. Morgan. It is a place on the tip of the bay where a Civil War fort was built. The view from that site is about 325 degrees around. Almost a complete view into Mobile Bay and Gulf of Mexico. Walked around there for a bit and realized that I wouldn’t have wanted to fight in that war either. So desolate and scary. Did see a huge number of oil derricks, counted twenty in sight of the plain eye from where we were standing.
Drove back off the point and stopped at Big Daddy’s to have a drink and watch the sunset. Great outdoor patio and entertainment but it had gotten too cold to sit outside. Still enjoyed our time with Roy and Ellen and as you can see from the photo they had quite a wine selection in their cellar.

Drove back, picked up our car and headed the half hour back to our boat. As we approached the area Andy mentioned that some of the lights were out on the big expansion bridge by the marina. As we pulled in, we realized the entire marina was without power. Andy investigated and the fuel truck hit a power pole around noon and they had been working on it for some time. They had all power restored by 8:00 and all was well. Feel into bed after a long, wonderful day.
