Day #100 - Mobile, AL
November 8th, 2008
Day #100, we can hardly believe it. What a trip it has been.
Left the boat this morning after Andy’s usual repairs, updates of a few items. We drove to Battleship Park in downtown Mobile to see the park and the USS Alabama that is docked there. It is a battleship from World War II that held 2,500 crew members. The park surrounding it was beautiful, set right on Mobile Bay. Touring the boat was a self guided tour that lasted about two hours. Thank goodness they had numbers and arrows pointing the way or I might still be wandering around down there. It was absolutely enormous and gave you even more respect for the soldiers who did their time in World War II on a battleship. Very fitting for Veteran’s Day 2008. Thank you to all of the men and women who have served and are serving to protect this country and all of us.

Left there and drove to beautiful Fairhope, AL on the east shore of Mobile Bay. Had a great lunch at Guy’s Gumbo Shack. Great barbecue, gumbo and red beans and rice. It has been featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Great little spot off the beaten track.

After lunch I asked for a couple of hours and had an “all about me” day. It had been three months since I had had a haircut and it was time. Resisted the Walmart Salons of the past outings and opted for this wonderful hair salon in Fairhope. It was an Aveda salon and it was wonderful. I had a pedicure and it lasted almost an hour. They even wrapped my legs and feet in hot, moist towels immersed in essential oils. Then I went for the haircut and they began with a shoulder, neck and scalp massage. Each of the treatments used Aveda products and it was soooooo relaxing and wonderful. All of that and it was still less expensive than what I pay for a haircut at home. Could that be reason enough ot move to Fairhope?????
After that we went down to the marina in town where we knew some other Loopers might be. Immediately ran into Ellen and Roy on Our Turn. Sat and caught up with them for a bit and watched the sunset. Made us feel better as they are having repairs as well. They are having two transmissions rebuilt. Ouch! Made plans to go back there tomorrow and pick them up at 11:00. We will go south to the Orange Beach and other areas of exploration down there. Looking forward to it.

Today was a beautiful, sunny and rejuvenating day!

First of all, thank you so much for keeping us who are watching your progress informed. Now that I have been following your trip, my fears are deminishing.
It is unfortunate that you hit the log, however, I trust your insurance will help with the costly repairs.
Your comments and photo’s are great.
Very appropriate that you are touring the Alabama at this time. THANK YOU TO ALL THAT HAVE SERVED.
Keep it up and take care.

Great to watch and read of your progress as you continue to move south and good luck with your repairs. Your daily accounts make us wish we were looping…but work calls as we complete the farming here in east central Illinois. Our tug boat is wintering in South Haven, Mi as we begin the count down to spring when we will be back on the boat for the summer.
As you continue your trip be safe,

Looks like your hearing from the South Haven contingent today.
We have our boat on stands and under wraps for the winter. Reading about your adventures and seeing your pictures makes our short cruising season a bit longer.
Keep it up.
Wishing you sunny skies and calm waters.
