Day #96 - Mobile, AL
November 4th, 2008A surprise of an overcast day today. Wonder if that has any correlation to the fact that it is Election Day 2008. Finally, as these candidates have been campaigning for two entire years. Not sure if they are exhausted, but the voters are!
Our final descent into Mobile today. More of the same, twisting, winding river, much like the few days past. Looking forward to getting to Mobile, although we have really found the Black Warrior to be beautiful and serene.
As you can see, we are headed back into civilization.

The real estate options are becoming more available. Looks like a hurricane may have hit one of these. Neighborhood decorations…a dead alligator adorns the shoreline.

At one point we pass a railway swing bridge called 14 Mile Bridge. It only has a four foot clearance from the water so you have to call to have it opened when you arrive. We were lucky and they opened it for us right away.

The foliage is changing as we approach Mobile Bay. You begin to see fan palms and more bayou type plants. It is becoming obvious that you are beginning to deal with tides on the shore and we are now in salt water.

You go right from the bayou into Mobile Bay, literally within three miles. Mobile Bay is an amaizingly busy port. There is barge and tug traffic, pleasure crafts, freighters and commercial cruise ships. The captains really have to be on their toes when entering this port.
