Follow us around the Great Loop

Day #67 - Grand Rivers, KY

October 6th, 2008

I was put in charge of calling the Lockmaster this morning at 0600.  For any of you who know me, you can imagine, I slept very little last night even though I set an alarm.  We had heard horror stories of waiting for hours to pass through the next lock, just below our current location.  To my amazement, the Lockmaster said to come on down and he would let us through ASAP.  We watched the sunrise in the lock and were completely done and on our way by 8:00.

Today we leave the Ohio River and enter the Cumberland River and Kentucky.  We have two locks to deal with and the second one lifts us 52 feet.  Haven’t done one nearly that big before.  Quite ride down the Cumberland and it is narrow and winding.  Saw the buzzards along the way and hoped they weren’t waiting for stranded boaters as boaters are probably about all they see.

Went through the Barklay Lock leaving the Cumberland River and heading into Barklay Lake.  Lucky agian to day to lock right through.  Made it to Green Turtle Bay in 7 houts, and it was approxiamtely 45 miles.

We are planning a few days of R&R at Green Turtle Bay in Grand Rivers, KY.  http://www.greenturtlebay.com/
