Day # 43 - Chicago, IL

September 12th, 2008

Woke up to a rainy day in Chicago.  It never went below 70 degrees last night and very muggy.  We had arranged for a rental car today to run some errands.  Andy went to West Marine and bought new foul weather gear.  Guess we have finally gotten realistic that the sunny, warm weather we had for all of August won’t last the entire trip.  Next we went to Walgreen’s to a walk in clinic.  I have had a major sore throat and congestion and wanted to make sure it wasn’t headed for something worse before we left for the river system.  That was quick and painless and with a few meds they sent us on our way.  Then headed to lunch.  Easier said than done as parking is tough in the city.  Ended up in Lincoln Park, near DePaul, and ate at a neat little restuarant with a U of M theme.  If you know us, you know that was strictly a cooincidence, as we are MSU fans.

Then went and did the necessary grocery shopping for the weekend and to start our river trip.  Andy thinks I am convinced we are leaving civilization and he’s not far off.  Not anticipating the best parts of the trip when we leave Chicago.  All of that is lightened as we are expecting Peggy and Gary Barker and Laurie and Paul Walters to arrive tomorrow.  Will be great to spend time with old friends and enjoy the city together.

Nice that Chicago has cooperated and even held fireworks for us last night.  Very hospitable of them.

Mary, you are leaving civilization….as you know it.
I recommend when you cross the Masson-Dixie Line you fly the stars & bars (Confederate) flag.
I’ve been told that the Rebel Pirates will leave you alone.
    GOOD LUCK!!
