Follow us around the Great Loop

Day #37 - Chicago, IL

September 6th, 2008

Left beautiful South Haven at 7:00 this morning with the sunrise.  Headed to Chicago as the weather was supposed to be perfect for the 68 mile crossing (6.75 hours.)  NOAA weather didn’t let us down as the Lake was fairly calm and the winds were coming from the northeast.

Arrived at Burnham Harbor in beautiful downtown Chicago.  We pulled into the slip they had assigned us and low and behold someone was already in there.  Had to regroup and they finally sent us to a better location.  We are in with mostly large seasonal boats and the marina is located right next to Soldier Field.  It was our lucky day as they were having a marching band competition.  As soon as we pulled in several people came up and introduced themselves…very friendly bunch.  One stranger even offered to loan us his car.  Walked around for quite a while and got acquainted with the marina.  It has over 1,000 slips and is only one of several city run marinas.  They do a great job.

We have looked for other Great Loop boats but have only seen one today and the way the docks are set up and locked at the sidewalk you can only access your own dock.  Being a part of the AGLCA really helps identify other boats doing the same trip.

We plan to walk into town and go to dinner.  Tired after a long but fun day.
