Day #5 - Mackinac Island, MI

August 6th, 2008

Left Preque Isle at 6:20 am after a calm and restful night in the marina.  Beautiful little spot.

Our plan was to go to Cheboygan, but decided to head to Mackinac Island as the weather was forcasted as calm and looked like a good day to cross the Straits of Mackinac which can be tough.  After about an hour the fog set in but with a great captain and good instrumentation we survived the hour.  A little nervous but all was well. Then the sun came out and we had a beautiful run the rest of the way.

Made it into harbor at 1:00, about 6.5 hours after we left.  Got settled into our slip and tied up and went for a walk onto the island.  What a beautiful spot this is.  Dave and Lin Sheppard (they have a home on the island) came to the boat for a drink and nibbles and we set off (on foot) for dinner. For those who don’t know, there are no cars allowed on Mackinac Island so you walk, ride a bike or get a ride (horse drawn carriage).  Had dinner at Mission Point with a piano player and a beautiful view.  After dinner we walked to their boat, a brand new 35′ Tiara.  Very nice and they are taking off with 30 other boats to the North Channel in the morning.

Our weather has been outstanding and looks to be another one today.  Cell and internet reception on the island are spotty, but keep trying.  Plan to stay on Mackinac until Friday.  More later.
